Luis Suarez was planning to abandon Barcelona and return to his first side, Nacional, when it seemed that Sebastian Abreu had a chance to become a coach, a former Uruguayan international say.
Nacional was without a coach late last year when Alvaro Gutierrez resigned, with Abreu – who spent three times there as a professional – maintaining that he was a leading contender to get a position.

Around the point, he spoke to Suarez, who seemingly indicated moving to Uruguay was a possible possibility, given becoming one of the most well paying stars in Spain, who having been signed to Barcelona until 2021.

Abreu was a colleague with Suarez in the national team between 2007 and 2012, both of whom were part of the squad that led Uruguay to place fourth in the 2010 World Cup, and the Barca player seems to have shown a willingness to reconcile with 'El Loco.'

"I had a complete, true chance [of becoming National Coach]," he said to the Uruguayan radio station Sport 890.
"And when Luis was about to arrive in those days, after December 18, I said to him, 'Hey, Lucho, it's not a sure thing, but maybe there's a possibility... what's your situation? What do we do?'"
Abreu says that Suarez responded, 'If you want to be a football teacher, let me talk to Sofi, let me talk to the baby. I've always told you that if you were a coach, I would be moving back." He added: 'Going back to Nacional was something that motivated Luis, it was a nice chance.' Former goalie Gustavo Munua, also a international friend of Abreu, got the work.
