Manchester United desired Cristiano Ronaldo to move to Barcelona instead of Real Madrid.

According to stories in Spanish newspapers, former Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson approached Barcelona and urged them to make a deal for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portuguese football hero Cristiano Ronaldo's 90 million euro move from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2009 is regarded as a milestone moment in the history of both clubs.

Although Real Madrid marked the beginning of the career of a Santiago Bernabeu player who would become their highest goal scorer for the United States, it was the end of the squad that many of the finest Alex Fergusons had built in his 26-year reign in Old Trafford.

Ronaldo's exit story, though, has become one that has been extended for a long time. Ferguson's contempt for Real Madrid's willingness to offer exorbitant prices to purchase the best talent in the world is something he never attempted to cover, and it is claimed that he was also able to sell Ronaldo to Real's Barcelona arch-rivals only to make sure that nobody but the giants of Madrid can get his star ahead.

Real Madrid allegedly offered to pay Ronaldo 75 million of the Euro-payment provision, and Ferguson flew to Portugal to slash Madrid's offer directly.

In the end, though, Ferguson knew of Ronaldo's willingness to join Real, and that was the secret to the move.

Ronaldo's deal was a four-year high before Real smashed it again to purchase Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur. Unlike several other stars who failed to explain their huge transfer payments, though, Ronaldo will continue to remain one of the best performers in the club's history. His record of 451 goals in only 438 games renders him the top goal scorer in the club's history. He's been the highest goal scorer for them in La Liga and the Champions League.

Ronaldo and Ferguson have shared their respect for each other a number of occasions in the years since then. Ronaldo named Ferguson his father in soccer terminology, although Ferguson regarded Ronaldo as one of the four stars that he managed to render him genuinely world-class along with Ryan Giggs, Paul Paddy and Eric Cantona.
