Barcelona captain Lionel Messi won the Ballon d'Or in 2019 as the best player of the year.

Argentine star Messi won his sixth Ballon d'Or on December 3.
Along with winning the prestigious football award, the 32-year-old Messi also became the player to win the most Ballon d'Ors.

In winning the award, Messi overtook Liverpool star Virgil Van Dijk and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Netherlands star Van Dijk was second and Italian club Juventus forward Ronaldo was third.

Before that, Ronaldo and Messi had won the Ballon d'Or five times each.

At the awards ceremony in France, the two were in a race to set a world record by beating each other.

Of the two rivals, Messi won the award. And, some media outlets have recently mentioned that Ronaldo is saddened by not receiving this award.
